KITCHENER — Why did this armed confrontation not become a shooting? The witness recording shows a Waterloo Regional Police officer creating distance with his firearm drawn while a man advances and moves around stopped traffic. WRPS reported that the man had returned to his truck, retrieved a hatchet and threatened the officer after an earlier CEW deployment failed. The public angle does not clearly resolve every object in hand at every instant, so that detail remains attributed to the police account. The visible sequence ends with a second CEW deployment and an arrest as more officers arrive—not a firearm discharge. Police laid six charges, including assaulting police with a weapon and attempting to disarm an officer; those charges are allegations, not convictions. Later reporting says the officer received an Ontario Medal for Police Bravery. Accountability can expose abuse, and it can credit restraint. Evidence-led review is not anti-police. It follows the record wherever it leads. Sources: witness phone video uploaded by Reddit user NecroticUvula; WRPS occurrence WA25032221; CityNews Kitchener, Feb. 6 and 11, 2025.
