KITCHENER — Same encampment. Similar high-risk imagery. Materially different reported facts. In July 2022, police responded to a reported gun during an altercation; reporting says no weapon was found, the identified man was released and no injuries were recorded. In August 2025, police responded to reports of a handgun; WRPS later reported recovering an imitation firearm and laying three charges. Those charges are allegations, not findings of guilt. The 2025 clip also shows a disputed kicking motion that cannot be resolved from the public angle alone. This is why Waterloo Region residents should not be forced to choose between a short viral clip and a police press release. WRPS should routinely publish privacy-treated timelines, relevant body-camera excerpts, force rationales and final outcomes. Transparency after outrage is damage control. Transparency by default is accountability. Sources: Edwin Finch eyewitness video; CTV News eyewitness clip; Global News; CambridgeToday; WRPS occurrence WA25221804.
